Cameroon federation refuses Samuel Eto’o’s resignation as president

Samuel Eto’o, one of the greatest African players of all time, has tendered his resignation as the Cameroon Football Federation president after the national team exited the 2023 AFCON in the round of 16. Eto’o, who won the African player of the year a record four times, has been dogged by allegations of improper conduct, match-fixing, and corruption. The federation’s executive committee met to evaluate the national team’s performance and rejected Eto’o’s resignation, maintaining their current mandates and renewing their confidence in him to continue the reconstruction and development of Cameroon football. However, Eto’o has been facing corruption allegations, and CAF is already investigating the “serious” allegations from “several Cameroonian football stakeholders” against him. This has raised questions about Eto’o’s ambassadorial role with a sports betting company, and at least one club has complained to the Cameroonian federation about the deal. Despite these challenges, Eto’o’s resignation and the subsequent rejection by the executive committee highlight the complexities and controversies within Cameroonian soccer. Eto’o’s four World Cup appearances for Cameroon between 1998 and 2014 further solidifies his status as a legendary figure in African football.
Former president of the Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, tendered his resignation on Monday, which was subsequently rejected by the executive committee of the federation. Eto’o, a four-time African player of the year, has been facing allegations of improper conduct, match-fixing, and corruption.

The federation’s executive committee met in Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé, to assess the national team’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations. During the meeting, Eto’o offered to step down while encouraging other members to do the same, but his resignation was unanimously rejected by the committee.

The federation reaffirmed its confidence in Eto’o to continue leading the reconstruction and development of football in Cameroon. There was no mention of other decisions or conclusions in the statement issued by the federation.

Cameroon coach Rigobert Song’s future remains uncertain following the team’s disappointing Africa Cup campaign. Despite the team’s efforts to secure a win in its final group game, their lackluster performance in the round of 16 led to their elimination by Nigeria.

Eto’o’s resignation comes amidst ongoing allegations of corruption, as well as an investigation by FIFA’s ethics committee and the Confederation of African Football. Despite these challenges, Eto’o is considered one of the greatest African players of all time and has represented Cameroon in four World Cups between 1998 and 2014.
