Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen achieved a historic start to their Bundesliga season by equaling the best start in history and reclaiming the top of the table with a commanding 4-0 victory over Union Berlin. This victory has propelled Leverkusen to amass 31 out of a possible 33 points after 11 matches, a record previously achieved by Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich in 2015-16. Despite Bayern’s temporary lead after a 4-2 victory over Heidenheim, it was Alonso’s team that dominated on Sunday with goals from Alex Grimaldo, Odilon Kossounou, Jonathan Tah, and Nathan Tella.

Alonso lauded his team’s patience and expressed satisfaction with their performance following a series of away games, each resulting in a win. He has described the feeling of their success as “great at the moment.” Meanwhile, Union manager Urs Fischer acknowledged the clear distinction in class and recognized his team’s struggle, which he described as a “relegation battle.”

Elsewhere in the league, RB Leipzig secured a 3-1 victory at home against Freiburg, while Eintracht Frankfurt managed to come from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Werder Bremen. These results reflect the dynamic nature of the Bundesliga as the season progresses.
